BIPOC Comedy Night
celebrating BIPOC joy through stand-up comedy
TEDxCMU Salon is a branch of TEDx which aims to create spaces for underrepresented communities at CMU. We create these spaces through small, intimate events aimed at community building. As the head of Salon, I had the privilege putting together a comedy night celebrating BIPOC Joy with my team.
We scouted out and invited local BIPOC comedians who made a home for themselves in Pittsburgh to perform a set to an intimate group of CMU students. For a lot of them, stand-up isn’t their full-time job. However, they aimed to show our CMU attendees that comedy can be a source of community, especially in difficult times. We invited the following speakers:
- Jesse Feng, a member of the Steel City Arts Foundation, who performs regularly at the Arcade Comedy Theater in Pittsburgh.
- Tyler Ray Kendrick, who was voted Best Comedian in 2022 and 2023 in Pittsburgh Magazine’s Best of the Burgh
- Brittany Alexis, who has performed in stages across Pittsburgh, including the Byham Theater.
- Amir Abdallah, a playful, witty, and honest comic, who is the host of Pittsburgh’s Gaslight Comedy
- Andrés Garcia Rubio, a CMU student from Coahuila, México who leads the Latino Grad Student Association as its president and international advocate
We laughed, we cried, we screamed together. A warm thank you to Salon and TEDx - we put together another beautiful event. A special thank you to our Design team who created our wonderful graphics.
